I agree that it wouldn't be wise to split the user/developer base even more. My wish list would be:

  • V9958 with 128KB of VRAM and 128KB of ext-VRAM
  • Turbo blitter option for the V9958
  • V9990 superimposed over the V9958, with the KanjiFont ROM
  • DVI output (as it can have adapters to connect to either VGA or HDMI)
  • Bonus: Sega Master System mode-4, with an option to use the GG extended palette

I also think it isn't wise to further split the user/developer, but I can't help but think about what could be done if we followed other ways. F18A is impressive in its own right, and its MK2 revision looks even more impressive. And it seems way easier to program than V9990.

@sd_snatcher's wishlist pretty much echoes mine, although I would be a bit bolder and try to extend addressing registers so we could have, maybe 512kB or 1MB VRAM. I can see where this could be a problem with the blitter, but perhaps thinking very hard could lead to a better solution (maybe a mapped VRAM? extended command engine? dreaming is free!). I'd also like to implement fully colored text modes and bring sprite support to them. I even made a draft of what the registers and the VRAM would look like.

F18A MK2 is much less impressive than V9990.
Add RAM splits the user/developer as much as the other specific proposals, and it's useless if there is V9958 + V9990 superimposed.

If screen modes 6 and 7 were much faster, this text mode would not need to be added. So a V9958 with a turbo mode is more interesting. This remains compatible.

I never said F18A MK2 was more impressive than V9990. Just said that it seems easier to program for. I like that sprites are flippable, this helps save memory.

I agree with you that having more features, in practice, also splits the user/developer base. And if so, even a turbo blitter, while compatible, wouldn't help much if the software ran like molasses in classic VDPs.

I like the idea of a fully colored text mode because 1) it's simpler; 2) saves a lot of memory; 3) it's easy to use even from BASIC. You could use it to improve current text-mode software without modifying video routines too much.

In 2002/2003, I used to dream with a new improved V9958 with Screen13, 14, 15.... I don't do that anymore.

The reason is that we won't have new software to use these new features even if those features are available. V9990 is available for years, and only now it is starting to get the attention it deserves. Many people already have a V9990, if new software is what we want, V9990 is the way to go IMHO.

Besides the V9990, the only place I see we can get results is by improving the way software that already exists runs in MSX. A turbo Blitter would be cool and could bring new life to many MSX softwares that are already available.
