* Imo, Bazix actually did a very childish thing when they got the MSX-MBox link in that magazine removed. This is not only immature but also questionable ethics and perhaps not even legal. A correct action would be to send a letter to the MSX-MBox people and ask them to remove any games for which Bazix have copyright or distribution righs for. I am absolutely sure this does notinclude all games shipped with MSX-MBox.
* Bazix does not represent all companies that did MSX games in the 80's. I wonder if they even represent any game companies, but thats for snout or another Bazix representative to tell (I couldn't find any info on their website).

I have some comments on this part (note: I also consider myself neutral, I have nothing to do with Bazix or any other party in this, except that I'm a regular poster on MRC.):

  • Why is it childish and immature to get that link removed? Stuff like MSX-MBOX threatens their business, isn't it logical then?
  • Why is this unethical or illegal? In whichever way you look at it, the owners of the copyrights of 99.9% (or so) of the software in MSX-MBOX have not given permission to spread the software like that. So, anyone could notify anyone who is spreading that software about this. Most people/institutions with some name (e.g. ComputerIdee) would act on it and remove the software, as it's illegal to offer software for download of which you do not have the permission from the author (copyright holder) to do so. I don't think this has anything to do with what licenses Bazix has.
  • Because Bazix has some of these licenses, and will probably get more (but of course not nearly by far all titles in MSX-MBOX), MSX-MBOX threatens their business, so, it's in their interest to send these (Cease&Desist in some cases) letters. But still: anyone can send those. Check the C&D topic in Wikipedia, e.g.
  • So, Bazix doesn't need to be representing anyone to tell someone he is doing something illegal. Nor does anyone else.

You see that the above 4 points are actually only one point, but with a few minor differences in perspective. Anyway, I hope I make myself clear here.

The bottom line is: if you're spreading software you don't have the right to, you should not be surprised if someone tells you to stop it, because it's illegal. The thing is that in our community, this hasn't happened very often since 1993 or so. A downside of the commercial revival, I suppose; companies (Bazix, D4E, Konami, etc.) find it important again, after being silent for years.

* Removing that link is like M$ requiring PC's to include Windows. Forcing a 3rd party entity to do something to gain advantage over something else is childish and unethical.
* Its unethical to manipulate 3rd parties instead of going to the source. The Magazine didn't do anything wrong
* Bazix has licenses and should ask MSX-Mbox to remove the affected games. I don't disagree.
* The Magazine didn't do anything illegal.

* Still struggling with the bullet lists Wink

I fail to see the comparison of M$ requiring PC's to include Windows. You are correct that the magazine didn't do anything wrong or illegal. But the magazine did give a huge amount of attention to something that is illegal. In that sense, it becomes more harmful, so action was taken, of which I'm not surprised.

Again: if you know you're doing something illegal (host software that's not yours), you should be prepared that some day someone might say something about it. You should definately not start to whine, because someone did that. You're still doing something illegal. It's your risk. And if the thing that's not yours consists of thousands of software titles which are very easily accessible and installable, you make the risk that someone tells you to stop spreading it just a bit bigger.
And if you're then a magazine that links to that thing, you can expect the magazine to get contacted as well...

I think the reason why you see a bigger part of the news being OCM or Woomb here than in other forums is because of the connection with Bazix

I think this is quite a load of bull. MRC posts about -all- MSX news, and is enthusiastic about -almost- everything. OCM and WOOMB are no exceptions. We have been doing so for more than 5 years now, so I'm quite offended by the term 'biased'. If you want to call us biased, propagandistic and overly-optimistic then you are completely right, but we are so about the entire MSX computer system and related news on the whole and not about OCM/WOOMB/revival news only. We just don't want to burn our fingers on warez, that's all.

So far for thread contributions from my side, I just got back home from the toughest 2 weeks of my life and will probably limit my MRC activity to posting news when I feel like it for the time being.

@snout: I really didn't mean to offend you. I haven't seen any discrimination on newsposts. But you must agree that you have a lot of insight into Bazix and Woomb and I know you really like it. So its only natural that you want to promote and show what its all about. I'm sure that if some other guy in the MRC team was interested in something else, he or she would want to write a lot about that.
Sometimes I think you and wolf_ automatically get into a defensive position. You really don't need to explain to me why you like Woomb. I'm also passionated about some things too so I know. I guess it must be quite tiering to always read negative news posts or conspiracy theories.
But as I said to wolf_, I'm just trying to describe what I see, not put any strong feelings into it. I'm neither a rebel nor a stormtrooper Smile
