I always appreciate when others show progress in their projects, so I thought I'd do the same.

It's been 4,5 months since last video-update, and since then I've been starting the adoption of the planned graphical theme, added story elements and created new encounters and other gameplay elements. Sound-effects and systems for score, coins count, time and power-ups are in too. On top of that, a (too?) subtle parallax on the clouds as well as a shitload of optimizations has been done Smile

At least it runs at 60Hz now, but music is still missing, so that's the next big thing!

(Sorry about the boring loading time from 0:23 to 1:00 - I didn't have video-software ready to edit the original ZMBV-encoded files. Next time, I'll do something about this loading time, or start recording later of course Smile )

It looks really nice!

Drawings are awesome, and the little details everywhere are also remarcable!

Congrats!

It looks awesome. It simply looks very good. you would almost believe its screen 5.

Sprites are beautifully drawn and the cutscenes are great. All simple and great at the same time. If you keep everything as simple as possible 60 hz will be very doable. 30 hz will go fine as well. Music eats tons of cpu on z80 but 60hz will remain doable.
I love the small and simple details as well. Cute and awesome. Please keep this up.

only the jumps look somewhat stiff. Your hero can definitely jump more smoothly and controlled (as in a described feeling). Falling and jumping can really be smoothen out and make your engine feel way over the top.

You have a very long way to go. Depending on the amount of maps and options you are planning this may still take you alot of time. If you plan on giving up. Remember that there is some idiot that took about 7 years to build something like this so in any way you CAN do this and get it finished Smile

What I always do is: 1) create the game play 2) F10, reverse goto 0, F10 3) Use PgUp/Pause to fine tune the point where you want to start recording. When you're there, start recording. 4) upload to YouTube
Or alternatively, I believe you can nowadays cut off parts of your video in YouTube itself.

Great to see the progress on your game! I believe it may be a bit too fast at points. The jumping speed seems to need a little tuning... (compare to your great example Smile) and the stalactites also fall very quickly. What about adding some gravity to these?

That looks very very good. It's great to see this kind of games with such a high quality being developped on our beloved system. Keep up the good work and if you ever want a playable (demo-)version online you know where to find me ;-)

Thank you all for the nice words! So nice to hear. Motivating Smile

Oh, yes. The amount of details and mechanisms to get right are quite a lot. I deal with them one at a time Smile

As for the jumping. It is not polished or tweaked - not sure what to do yet (so feedback like this is really great - it will make the game better). But my main gripe with many msx platform games, is that they are too slow, and not snappy/responsive enough. This game targets fast and snappy (but may be too fast now). The player should feel 100% in control. We might be talking about the same thing? Smile

yes we are Smile The game can be fast and it is fast but it is the feel that can change. When you jump it can feel very responsive and relax at the same time. It is difficult to describe but when you play alot off platform games you understand what I mean. If jumping happens fast you loose the feeling of control over your character. If your character accelerates too fast the same happens. But jumping up too slow or falling too slow gives you the feel of slugishness. It is a balance of both. Jump starts very fast then immediately gravity kicks in and gently deaccelerates your character. When falling begins the reversed thing happens but all within a nice controllable timeframe. You can then control your character around while in the air and so on.
