The television is exactly the problem... This is very typical for LCD televisions. They save money & effort on the scaling and this is the end result... It is not so bad problem with VCR but computer games without pixels on left can be pretty annoying. Generally I would say mixing old and new hardware this way is looking for troubles. Ultimately best, low cost solution: Get a real CRT. Second best solution: Connect laptop instead and use emulator.

the silly thing with these screens is that there is an auto button, but that only centers what comes in through vga.
So maybe get an active rgb-vga converter (do they exist?) or framemeister/ossc kind of solution for the hdmi input.

If your computer battery works well, SET ADJUST is practically ok solution for MSX1 titles, but especially for horizontal scrolling MSX2 games it is completely useless.

Especially flat screen embedded scalers are typically full of problems that unfortunately are not limited to cutting picture from sides... like jerky scrolling, blurred picture while scrolling, bad deinterlace, delay in picture output, losing of sync when changing refresh rate, saturated colors, jail bars, wrong shape pixels, lack of scanlines etc. etc. etc.

Quickly about the most popular external scalers: OSSC is great, but although the price has come down, it is still practically more expensive and more complex to use compared to CRT. (I have one "for emergency", but I use CRT in home environment). Framemeister is excellent when it comes to picture quality, but on negative side, it adds one frame (~20ms) delay and costs you both arm and a leg. If you must work with retro computers and flat screens these are anyway the classical serious options you want to check out. These are the ones that are known to usually give you a nice result after some tuning.
