SD Mapper 512 is the best value you can get for little money, no doubt about it. Since you are using a MSX1 and that no games benefit of FM-PAC, it is a great value entry.

I'm sure there is a list of MSX1 games that support FM somewhere.
R-Type is one.

Thanks everyone.. My HX10 does come with 64k memory..

I'll look for an SD Mapper 512.. While I spent £120 on the machine (it came fully boxed with the tape player (also boxed) and soem games), I am on a budget (although I would love to get one real cartridge someday).

R-Type is the only commercial MSX1 game that ever supported it. The other 15 or so are mostly MSXDev games and a few others, like Squeek by ANMA.
So, for the FM support in games, it's not worth it. For SCC support it is, though! No SCC in SD-Mapper.... You'll miss out with the music on some good Konami games.

Hint for any future MSX buyer: if you want to buy an MSX to play games, better buy an MSX2 or later. Not an MSX1.

The SCC is also used in several other nice games. The SD-Mapper will never be able to execute them because you don't have slot 2 (except if it can work in the slot 3 with an adapter. Note that my Sunrise CF doesn't work in the slot 3!).

The SD-Mapper is not able to operate large MegaRoms but this will be possible by adding a basic megaflashrom or a megasram in the expansion bus with an adapter.

The megaflashrom wittout RAM is only 30 euro more expensive that the SD-512 from 8bit4ever. Without its RAM, it is less convenient to use but it can run more games than the Mega-mapper and you can add the RAM internally or externally later. I think it's more economical that way than to buy Mega-mapper then another interface later.

I think that not being able to execute is an exageration... You won't be able to listen to the SCC sound track, but Konami games play nice without the SCC as far as I know, and I'm really thinking of a commercial MSX1 game that won't work on a SD MAPPER 512 (the 1024 version is so nice, never understood why more of those are not produced, those allow 512 Mapper and 512 Megaram which allow running even large 8KB mapper games quite easily).

While I don't discourage anyone to fork over 100-150 USD/EUR on a Carnivore 2 (preferrably) or a SCC SD Megaflashrom (if not finding a Carnivore 2) as it is money well spent, even more if you later use it on a MSX2 or better, but 50 vs 120 euros for whoever is on a budget might be too much when we are talking about not having SCC sound track on Konami games that support it as the limitation... There is a market for everyone, right? Wink

SD-512 costs 70 euro. MegaFlashROM SCC+SD (without mapper) costs 99 euros. You misread my previous post.

For me, the sound is an important part of the game. So I consider that it does not work properly without that.

Otherwise, I agree with you, the price of the MegaFlashROM SCC+SD is excessive, especially for the RAM.
