Hello everyone, I'm glad to be here! I'd like to know if I need an MSX or MSX 2-I'm mostly interested in playing Compile shooters, since I LOVE Compile.

Also, which model? I've been told that you can plug them, with AV cables, into your TV, and even use a Genesis controller with them! How much memory would I need? I live in the US, so I'd have to get an NTSC model.

The Japanese MSX2 games usually work with 64KB RAM, as that was a typical amount of RAM in Japanese machines. Hence, the Compile shooters (Aleste1, 2, Gaiden) work on any MSX2 with 64KB RAM. The Konami shooters (Nemesis1, 2, 3, Salamander, Parodius) run on any MSX1, except Space Manbow, which runs on MSX2 and MSX2+.

The nice bit about the MSX standard is that any technically capable model will do!

Compile and other developers produced plenty excellent shmups for plain old MSX, such as Zanac as you probably know.

If you get an MSX2, however, you can play all MSX games and looots of more gems of MSX-shooting.
To be honest, if you like Compile shooters, I think you can't miss out on Zanac-Ex, Aleste, Aleste 2 and Aleste Gaiden, which are all MSX2 games and AFAIK initiated the later series of Aleste, M.U.S.H.A. etc.

The MSX2 version of Xevious which Compile developed with Taito is also a more than decent port IMHO.

[edit] And what wolf_ said about the memory and the MSX2+ Smile

About the NTSC, I guess everything will just go o.k. when you get a Japanese model from for instance Sony, Sanyo or Panasonic.

However 64kbytes will only be enough if you have the cartridge versions (that is if you have the cartridge).

Those games existed also on disk cracks that required more ram. Some of those are playable on msx2 with 128kbytes of ram (although a little slower because of the memory map system versus rom versions, and the fact that data are exchanged from vram to ram since 128kbytes would not be enough for a 128kbyte game,so technicaly vram is used as storage location for data and since code cannot be executed in vram there are many ldir from vram to ram and that is much slower).

So if you buy a 64kbyte machine, you would need cartridge games. For disk versions usually you need ram that is twice the size of the cartridge.

So my idea is to get a machine with 128kbytes or more of ram or invest and get the megaflash scc cartridge. That way you can transfer rom images into the megaflash scc,and 64kbytes will be enough.

Hey Dave Smile

If you're just interested in shmups I recommend a MSX2+ from Sony, Panasonic, Sanyo. Games like Space Manbow (and I think Aleste 2) will have smoother scrolling than on a regular MSX2. Also a MSX2+ has MSX-Music built-in so no need to rush out and buy a FM-PAC. Of couse the FM-PAC is would still be useful for its SRAM.

Seriously, 64KB ram is all you'll ever need. I have a external 4MB RAM cart and I hardly use it. I can't remember any other time I've needed more Ram, except when I'm wanted to play translations of Snatcher and SD-Snatcher.

When you finally pickup a system, make sure to buy a MegaFlashRom SCC. Trust me you'll need this.

True. For Aleste you need either the original ROM (which is cool as it is ofcourse :hannibalSmile, use FlashROM or NoWind or get a (modified) machine with128K RAM to run cracked disk versions with possible setbacks.
Aleste 2 & Gaiden were distributed on disk only though, and certain cracked games like Zanac and Guardic are good with 64K. Smile

Lookie here for pics of some Compile MSX shooters over the years:

'Smoother' is not exactly the right word here for Space Manbow. On MSX2+ you have border masking, but the scroll itself is as smooth on MSX2 as it is on MSX2+. MSX2 *can* scroll smoothly you know.. Tongue Never seen Aleste 2 on MSX2+ but face it, vertical scrolling on MSX2 is just like scrolling on MSX2+.

If you're getting an MSX2+, you'll also be able to play Laydock Last Attack.

This is an absolutely GREAT but quite hard shooter which alternates between straight & diagonally scrolling topview and straight & diagonally scrolling sideview.
