So... after all this time, how are the experiences with these joypads quality-wise? Anyone have a broken pad yet?  What is the build-quality like? Does it feel cheap or well-made?

Since we seem to have a growing number of SofaRun fans...
Did anyone test how many buttons sofarun recognises?
Is it possible to improve this modification to have more buttons functional?

I'm guessing that the controller available in the op is a mega drive knockoff controller? The link isn't working. I have found a cheaper source for these controllers (the quality is crap but the one in the op is the same) http://www.aliexpress.com/item/6-Button-Wired-Pad-Gamepad-Co...

I want to know whether I can do this mod on a genuine mega drive 6 button pad or if there something stopping me? I'd like to do this mod then connect arcade micro switched buttons/stick to the controller pcb. Please post any images of custom controllers anyone has made to inspire me :)

X-Arcade mod:

You can recognize the 5$ joypad PCB glued on the casing. Works quite well.

The JoyMega is not internal so that I can use the X-Arcade with a real MegaDrive too (I'm not spending all my gamer time on MSX, just 90% of it :))

That makes a nice MSX gamer setup:

Lovely setup! Big smile I want to do pretty much the same thing, although I want to just have the wires from the host MegaDrive gamepad pcb on quick connects so I can hotswap them for other padhacks. I've got a really good hori arcade stick with sanwa parts that is all solderless but I haven't got started yet.

Thanks for the tip, ordered two of these. Now I'll just wait for the 35-42 day delivery. :P

these were the ones from the OP

http://www.dx.com/p/additional-gamepad-controller-for-sku-28...

They look slightly different than the one in your ali express link. Im not sure if the quality is the same though since i dont have either of them. Also if you are planning on using an official sega 6button joypad for this.. please dont since they are imho too good to waste..

I bought a bunch of great third party megadrive pads, was planning to use them as a pcb for a joystick project but I dont think its right to ruin quality pads so I am thinking of picking up some from alixepress or dx.

I was thinking about the same...Ive been wanting to create a joystick for msx for some time now, also with real sanwa parts. Ideally I want to multi-console mod my qanba stick (kinda like your hori but made in china, all sanwa parts) for use on msx as well as its original setup (pc/ps3/xb360).. too bad those multiconsole arcade stick pcbs like the Toodles' Cthulhu support almost every controller connecter on the planet EXCEPT the classic 9pin joystick connector.
