kind of CPU upgrade were you thinking of? Most upgrades are RAM upgrades or video chip upgrades (MSX2 to MSX2+ chip). A Japanese MSX2 only has 64kB RAM (usually), so you would probably want to upgrade that. ... can get is a: msx2+ running at 7Mhz with 256 or 512kb, you will have to change ram /roms / cpu / ...
