Introduction

FAC Music disk 1
(with FM Music interface)

Music disk published in December 1990 by the FAC team. It is part of the FAC Soundtracker 1 package.

It does not have an interface and if you don't use FAC Soundtracker, Studio FM, MIDI Blaster or the FM Music interface, the musical files can be used on MSX1.

Content

It contains 13 songs written in the FAC Soundtracker 1 format. Most of them can be played with MSX-MUSIC or MSX-AUDIO, but 3 songs are only for MSX-AUDIO.

Usage

How to play these musics in FAC Soundtracker 1?

  • press F6, then L to load a song
  • press F8 to load the appropriate drumkit for MSX-AUDIO
  • go back to FAC Soundtracker
  • optionally use SELECT to toggle between MSX-AUDIO and MSX-MUSIC
  • press F1, then RETURN 2 times to play the song

How to play these musics in Pro Tracker?

  • run the application by entering BLOAD"PTPROGRM.BIN",R
  • press CRTL+X to toggle between MSX-AUDIO and MSX-MUSIC
  • press CRTL+S to load a song
  • press F2 to play the song
  • if you have choosen MSX-AUDIO, it will sound differently because Pro Tracker is optimised for MSX-MUSIC (6 channels) and does not have support for samples.

How to play these musics in Studio FM (PSG + MSX-MUSIC)?

  • select the Disk option in the main menu
  • select Load data
  • select Load snd-tracker
  • choose a MUS file with the cursors and load it with RETURN
  • press ESC to go back to the main menu
  • select Sequence editor
  • press F1 to play the song, it will sound slightly different, as PSG is combined with MSX-MUSIC for the drums

How to play these musics in stereo (MSX-AUDIO + MSX-MUSIC)?

  • First note that some songs are optimised for one of the soundchips (and that the coder has not choosen the best instruments for the other chip) - in this case, avoid to play them in stereo!
  • You can use STL 2.11 created by C.S.I and E.M.P.
  • You can also use the 'Awesome Compilation Disk Creator' to convert the songs in the Moonsoft format and use the features of this utility to create a stereo compilation disk (*)
  • You can also use the great graphic loader FM Music available on Future Magazine 7 or Future Magazine 8 by adapting the SONGDIR.COM file (*)
  • You can optionally use the options "Load FST-Song" and "Load FST-Drumkit" of Moonblaster, but the converted music can sometimes sound slightly different from the original FST music

(*) this tool is only for the files in FAC Soundtracker 1 format

How to play these musics with a BASIC loader?

  • Try the BASIC.BAS file provided on the first disk of the FAC Soundtracker 1 package
  • Notes:
    • This loader is an example for your own programs, it uses the files FIND.SYS (detection of the required hardware) and FST.BIN (music driver). The best option is an adapted loader with all the files on the same disk.
    • To get a stereo sound (MSX-AUDIO + MSX-BASIC), replace FST.BIN by STL2.BIN (driver used in STL 2.11)

How to play these musics using MIDI?

  • You need to use MIDI Blaster, that has support only for the MIDI interface of the Philips NMS 1205 Music Module:
    • press F6 to load a FAC Soundtracker 1 song
    • define the MIDI channels for each instrument
    • press F1 to play the song
  • Note: for more settings, see the Help screen with F5 - You can get a stero effect by combining MSX-AUDIO and MIDI

How to use these musics as background for other applications?

  • You can use the driver REPLAY.BIN created by Albert Huitsing
  • You can optionally convert them to the Studio FM format and use the driver SFMDRV1.BIN or SFMDRV2.BIN, but the music will sound slightly different, as PSG is combined with MSX-MUSIC for the drums and Studio FM does not support MSX-AUDIO
