Introduction

Music disk published in September 1991 by the FAC team. It is part of the FAC Soundtracker 2 package.

It contains 8 songs written in the FAC Soundtracker 2 format. Most of them can be played with MSX-MUSIC or MSX-AUDIO, but 2 songs are only for MSX-AUDIO.

Usage

How to play these musics in FAC Soundtracker 2?

  • press F6, then L to load a song
  • press F8 to load the appropriate drumkit for MSX-AUDIO
  • go back to FAC Soundtracker
  • optionally use SELECT to toggle between MSX-AUDIO and MSX-MUSIC
  • press F1, then RETURN 2 times to play the song

Is it possible to play these musics in FAC Soundtracker 1?

No, these songs are not compatible with FAC Soundtracker 1, as they use new features included in FAC Soundtracker 2.

How to play these musics in Pro-Tracker?

  • run the application by selecting "Program" in the menu (original version) or entering BLOAD"PTPROGRM.BIN",R (files version)
  • press CRTL+X or CTRL+SELECT to toggle between MSX-AUDIO and MSX-MUSIC
  • press CRTL+S to load a song
  • press F2 to play the song
  • note that the slides are not converted, so don't be surprised if it sounds differently
  • if you have choosen MSX-AUDIO, it will sound differently also because Pro Tracker is optimised for MSX-MUSIC (6 melodic channels) and does not have support for samples

Is it possible to play these musics in Studio FM (PSG + MSX-MUSIC)?

No, these songs are not compatible with Studio FM, because the FAC refused to give permission to Studio FM coders for supporting the FAC Soundtracker 2 format.

How to play these musics in stereo (MSX-AUDIO + MSX-MUSIC)?

First note that some songs are optimised for one of the soundchips (and that the coder has not choosen the best instruments for the other chip) - in this case, avoid to play them in stereo!

  • You can use STL 2.11 created by C.S.I and E.M.P.
  • You can use Trackplayer 2.1 created by Patrick Kramer
  • You can use the options "Load FST-Song" and "Load FST-Drumkit" of Moonblaster, but the converted music can sometimes sound slightly different from the original FST music

How to play these musics with a BASIC loader?

  • Check the BASIC2.BAS and PROGRAM files provided on the first disk of the FAC Soundtracker 2 package

Notes:

  • BASIC2.BAS uses the files FIND.SYS (detection of the required hardware) and FST2.BIN (music driver). The best option is an adapted loader with all the files on the same disk.
  • To get a stereo sound (MSX-AUDIO + MSX-BASIC), replace FST2.BIN by STL2.BIN (driver used in STL 2.11)

How to play these musics using MIDI?

  • You need to use MIDI Blaster, that has support only for the MIDI interface of the Philips NMS 1205 Music Module:
    • press F6 to load a FAC Soundtracker 1 song
    • define the MIDI channels for each instrument
    • press F1 to play the song

Note: for more settings, see the Help screen with F5 - You can get a stero effect by combining MSX-AUDIO and MIDI

  • If you have a MSX Turbo R with internal or external MIDI interface, you can use the driver ST2MIDI4.BIN created by Henrik Gilvad

How to use these musics as background for other applications?

  • You can use the driver REPLAY.BIN created by Albert Huitsing
  • You can also convert them to the Pro-Tracker format and use the driver PT_DRIVE.BIN, but the music will generally sound different with MSX-AUDIO, as this tool is optimised for MSX-MUSIC (6 melodic channels) and does not have support for samples. Note that the FAC Soundtracker 2 slides are not converted, but it is possible to manually insert slides with Pro-Tracker.
