Description

The Konami Game Master 2 is a sequel to the original Game Master. It supports more games, and has the addition of 8kB SRAM which can be used by several games to save progress or to save your own levels like in King's Valley II.

Unlike the original Game Master, the Game Master 2 was never officially released outside of Japan. The Japanese title is コナミの新10倍カートリッジ a contraction of コナミの新10倍楽しむカートリッジ which translates to "Konami's New cartridge to enjoy 10 times". It was released in 1987 for 5800 Yen.

Starting and Slot order

You should normally put the Game Master 2 cartridge in slot 1 and the game cartridge in slot 2. This allows the Game Master to start, from where you can modify the settings for most supported games. If you reverse the cartridges, the game will start faster but only the SRAM feature will work.

By pressing [SHIFT] key during the MSX starting, you can deactivate the disk drives and Game Master 2 functions except the SRAM function.

As Contra and Hai no Majutsushi use the SRAM function only, they can't start from the Game Master 2 menu. So to play these games with SRAM function you have to press [SHIFT] key during the MSX boot or best, insert the Game Master 2 in slot 2.

Game Master 2 boot can be bypassed by pressing [Graph] or [Space] key during the MSX starting. In this case, you go to MSX-BASIC or MSX-DOS. This allows you to format your floppy disks for example.

Note: If your computer is an FS-A1ST, you probably need to press CTRL during the starting up, otherwise the Game Master 2 may not start, it freezes for some unknown cause on some FS-A1STs. When it happens, the disk driver overwrites some data (cartridge and RAM slots, etc.). Some models seem to have a buggy Disk ROM.

The menu screen of the Game Master 2 is different according you use a Japanese/Korean machine or not. Besides, there's an intro screen when you use a Japanese/Korean computer, and it's not the same on MSX1 compared to MSX2 (and higher).

Functions

Modify the Number of Lifes or Stage Number

You can change the number of lifes or stage number at startup by selecting "MODIFY" from the Game Master 2 main menu. Note that there are games that do not have the concept of number of life or stage, this function is not usable for such games.

Saving Game State to Disk

Press the [STOP] key during gameplay to pause, and press the [CTRL] key to enter save and load mode. Make sure the floppy disk has enough free space to back up. This feature is supported by many games, but not all.

To save, you must enter a file name of 1 to 8 characters. It can be made outside or during a game. Same for loading.

The file format is not compatible with Game Master 1. The Game Data include RAM and VRAM data of the specific used MSX machine.
