Description

The Panasonic FS-3900 is a "Wordprocessor Personal Computer" for the European market with a built-in 24 dots thermal transfer printer. It would appear to be similar to the National FS-4000 which was targeted for the Japanese market.

This system is very rare, insomuch that only one system is known to exist. It has a German QWERTZ keyboard, but the word processor firmware is in 3 languages (English, German and French). There are 3 manuals, of which one is in German and the other two are also in the same three languages.

There is speculation that Panasonic was looking to enter the European market: as mentioned in the Japanese MSX Magazine 1986-05, page 163, it had been shown at the CeBit fair of Hannover in March 1986, but in the end Panasonic decided not to continue. What is strange is that the system looks complete, including manuals, so it seems unlikely that only one unit was produced.

The firmware is on a 32kB ROM and contains many printer related instructions. It assigns important commands of the word processor to the functions keys when the computer is used in this special mode.
