Description

The YRM-302 RX (YRM-32 in Japan) Rhythm Editor is one of the programs developed by Yamaha that allows to use his MSX1/MSX2 CX computers to program data for another Yamaha device.

Most of these programs have as goal the programming of voices, we have here something different as it allows to create rhythm patterns for the RX11 Digital Rhythm Programmer and the RX15 Rhythm Sequencer. It was released in 1985 and has mouse support.

All data and parameters can be saved on disk, cassette tape or Data Memory cartridge UDC-01, they can be sent from the CX computer to the RX11 device.

Contrary to other Yamaha cartridges, the software is not launched automatically after booting. You need to enter CALL RX or _RX.

Screens

The YRM-502 software displays 4 main screens: the Pattern Editor (access by F1), the Song Editor (F2), the System Set-Up (F6) and the Load/Save menu (F7). You can also access to these screens by clicking on the corresponding icon.

System Set-Up (F6)

YRM-302 System Set-Up

After the intro screen, you will land on this screen where you can set different parameters related to your configuration. It's important to set them correctly before using this software.

The cursors are useful for selecting a parameter, but you will for sure prefer the mouse. To modify a parameter, you can use the (INS +) HOME or DEL keys.

The left bottom part of the screen indicates available features of this software, they can be reached by pressing a function key or clicking on the icon with the mouse. Going back to the System Set-Up screen will be possible with F6 or a click on the concerned icon.

In some cases, a list can be displayed. Press RETURN or SELECT on the appropriate parameter to make appear the list. Use the cursors to make your choice, then press again RETURN or SELECT.

These keys are also useful to make appear/disappear the 'hidden' parts of this editor (in the icons and level zones). They can be replaced by the mouse.

Notes

YRM-302 Pattern Editor

The notes for each instrument can be entered both ways:

- input from the computer keyboard by pressing the SPACE key on a location of the pattern diagram (a second pressing will remove the note)

- input from a MIDI keyboard by pressing first the CAPS key (a second pressing means that you quit this mode), then keys on the MIDI keyboard or RX instrument button (to remove a note, press simultaneously the SHIFT key)

In case of large amount of data, scrolling in the pattern diagram is activated. To avoid scrolling when selecting a location, press SHIFT at the same time as the cursors. To progress fast in the diagram, go to the icons in the Position section of the screen and use RETURN or SELECT.

The velocity of the sound can be modified for each note by using the HOME and DEL keys. A fine tuning of pronunciation timing can be made by pressing RETURN or SELECT to make appear an expanded diagram of the note, then using the right and left cursors. The stereo image position for each instrument can be altered for each note (useful only with RX11 device), this by using the up and down cursors while the expanded diagram is displayed. To confirm the new settings, use RETURN or SELECT. To erase the display of the expanded diagram, press CTRL.
